A call to East Texas fishermen: Be on the lookout for exotic weeds!

I try to read through some of the lake forums on the web pretty often. While reading through one fishing forum, a saw a lot of buzz about Salvinia Molesta or Giant Salvinia.

Someone had even posted a photo of what one poster said looked like "a very nicely trimmed lawn."
It did look that way, until you realize that there is a dock in the middle, and a boathouse with a boat on the side!
That is what salvinia does.
It takes over bodies of water!
Similar things can be seen with severe hydrilla infestations, and with water hyacinth. There are many others as well

Since the bass seem to like a "little" hydrilla, you might be tempted to think that it is a good thing, but there is rarely just a "little" hydrilla. When prevailing conditions favor it, it can take over in a short time. Make no mistake about it, it is a lake killing predator just like the others mentioned above! Eventually, once it has a foothold in a lake, something will have to be done, and that something will not be good for fishing!

Most of the time, these weeds are transported from one lake to the other by boats and boat trailers. You can do your part to stop the invasion by being vigillant.
