Salvinia Threatens Texas Lakes and Ponds

This invader in Texas has made the New York Times, and the NBC Nightly News!

Giant Salvinia has already taken over a large portion of Caddo Lake, and has been discovered in Lake Palestine. Most people aren't taking this type of problem very seriously, which aids in the plants mobility from lake to lake.

If it is not taken seriously now, it will be later! Boaters who are not cautious about the spread of this aquatic invader and others, could find themselves without a place for recreation.

This plant can go from 1, to 60 million in less than two months and has been called by experts, "The worlds worst weed!"

Boaters should be cautious and meticulous about cleaning between lakes. In almost every case of infestation, the problem began where boats enter and leave the lakes, parks and wildlife officials explained.

The apparent success of control measures in Lake Palestine serve to underscore the facts that it can be controlled, and that the best method for control aside from vigilant boaters, and thorough cleaning, is early detection. If you see anything lurking about in a pond or lake, immediate and appropriate action is what is needed to keep the problem from becoming unmanageable!
