Water Is Life In Texas, Our Lakes Provide That Water!

Attention East Texas Lake Owners: End Fish Suffering!

Don't let your fish suffer! During this time of year, your fish can suffer from serious oxygen depletion, making it difficult for them to breathe, feed and grow. Thats not just tough on them, it also spoils your fishing!

Causes:

This lack of available oxygen is caused by a number of small problems, that can become one big problem for you, your fish, and your pond or lake.

Vegetation Management and Mosquito Control: One of our most frequently asked questions.

  • Lack of proper vegetation.

If there is not enough phytoplankton in the water, there is not enough oxygen produced from photosynthesis. This also means the water is not as well shaded, which raises the temperature, and the warmer the water, the less oxygen.
  • Too much of the wrong type of vegetation.

Excessive vegetation can be a problem as well. Vegetation produces oxygen during the day, but uses oxygen at night, or on cloudy days. If there is little sunlight, photosynthesis stops, and in effect, reverses. If this is not balanced, low oxygen levels will occur.
  • Too many fish for the area.

If there are too many fish, using the available oxygen, there will be less oxygen for all.
  • High temperatures.

When it gets hot, there is less oxygen in the water.
  • Hot cloudy still days.

If there is little or no plankton to shade and produce oxygen, little or no naturally occurring shade, and a hot, still, cloudy day, with little photosynthesis occurring, that is a recipe for disaster!
Hot, but cloudy and still days.

Signs and symptoms:

If you see fish close to the top of the water, acting as though they are gasping for breath, well, they are! The dissolved oxygen level is probably low, and they are suffering as a result.

Effects:

When the fish begin to suffer, they no longer feed properly, and may burn off a lot of calories trying to breathe. This results in "skinny" fish, some may not have the strength to survive, and in severe cases, it can result in large scale "fish kill"! At best, they will not be as eager to follow your favorite lure.
